4x4 off roadingOff roading takes much more skill than just getting in your 4x4 vehicle and driving fast through natural obstacles. Skillful off roading takes some technique that some only learn from taking specialized driving classes. To others, it can come almost natural, as long as they follow some basic tips. The following paragraphs will provide a few basic tips when it comes to safe and skillful 4x4 off roading.

When off roading, it is very important to remember to watch the trail ahead of you for any obstacles or "surprises". If in any type of doubt, get out of the vehicle and check. For example, be sure a trail goes beyond any obstacle. If there is a cliff on the other side of a hill, it is important to know that ahead of time.

Reducing your tire pressure can also be beneficial to your 4x4 off roading experience. By doing so, it will improve the traction the tires will have in all conditions, especially in sand. When doing this, it important to remember to re-inflate the tires before the vehicle is taken back on-road. It can be done with a mini tire compressor, or air pumps that are usually stationed fairly close to the end of off roading trails.

While some people believe that it is necessary to drive extremely fast when 4x4 off roading, that is not the most skillful way to drive. The best way to drive a 4x4 off road vehicle is to drive it as slow as you can, but as fast as necessary. For example, when driving through sand or mud, it is sometimes necessary to keep the vehicle moving at a steady speed. However, driving slower on trails will not only help in picking up a smooth pass, it will also allow for time to react to the varieties of terrain you may be driving on.
